Why Consider a Fan-less CPU Computer?

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Many of VarTech’s new products are manufactured with fan-less motherboards. There are quite a few benefits of a fan-less motherboard design in an industrial environment. The most relevant one is zero dust intake. Eliminating dust intake increases reliability and allows for silent operation. A regular fan cooled system pulls air into the computer which in a dust prone area can lead to fan failure due to dust build-up. If that happens the CPU fan will have to be replaced. The likelihood of even greater damage is very high if this happens because the components the fan is designed to protect can overheat and fail as well. Aside from failure due to dust intake, a processor fan is just another moving part and can fail from normal wear and tear or defects. Fan failure is a common occurrence in all computers but in a mission critical production environment it can be very costly. Silent operation is a benefit for any computer operator but may be essential in areas such as hospitals, recording studios, or libraries. I know I’d enjoy silent operation having had plenty of noisy CPU fans myself which prompt me to kick my PC tower.

VarTech offers fan-less small form factor computers, fan-less panel PCs, and fan-less computer workstations.

VarTech Releases It’s Most Powerful SFF Industrial Computer to Date: the PowerCube

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

VarTech Systems has recently released the PowerCube, which is the most powerful small form factor industrial computer in VarTech’s product line-up. Engineered with the latest technology including Intel’s new 1.73 GHz Pentium Duo Core processor, the PowerCube delivers the ultimate in high performance rugged small form factor computing.

The PowerCube is designed with a standard 2GB of memory and a multitude of I/O ports. Impressive features, such as a DVD/CD-RW drive, built-in gigabit LAN, USB and Firewire are included in the base system.

The PowerCube has been engineered with a vibration dampened, high performance Scorpio series hard drive to enable operation in the harshest environments. The Scorpio HDD delivers best-in-class performance with low power requirements comparable to much slower notebook drives. In addition, you’ll get the quietest 2.5-inch drive on the market with real-time data protection technology to help keep your data safe along with low power consumption that yields increased reliability. ShockGuard technology is utilized to protect the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shock. DuraStep Ramp technology locks the heads in a secure position away from the disk to provide another layer of protection when the drive is not in use. Utilizing the most technologically advanced material available, the drive can perform a minimum of 600,000 load/unload cycles without contamination - up to twice the performance of its competitors. Additional vibration dampening bushing protection has been integrated on the exterior of the drive to provide the most advanced form of protection available.

The rugged all aluminum small form factor enclosure measures about the size of a hard cover novel yet surpasses performance of most desktop computers and notebook PCs. Multiple mounting options are available including an anti-shock and anti-vibration mobile mounting system, an ideal choice for rugged outdoor mobile applications. The compact size of the vehicle mount computer is smaller than a typical notebook computer, allowing for concealed installation in any available mounting location.

The robust PowerCube computer can either be purchased separately or installed within any VarTech industrial grade workstation and most of the VarTech all-in-one computers. PowerCube technology is also the basis of VarTech’s newly improved Rugged Industrial NEMA 4 (IP65) and NEMA 4X (IP66) Panel PC Computers.

VarTech Launches Vartech.mobi to Accommodate Mobile Device Internet Users

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

VarTech has debuted its new simplified mobile phone compatible website at http://vartech.mobi. The focus is to allow mobile device users to enjoy a clean, readable interface containing simplified content. Standard websites are generally too big to view on mobile browsers, too complicated, and, for mobile users paying by the data size, to costly. Now accessing http://www.vartechsystems.com via a mobile device will redirect the mobile user to http://vartech.mobi.

Vartech.mobi features an overview of products, contact information and form, plus a link to a mobile friendly Google map locating VarTech’s corporate office. Vartech.mobi utilizes directly linked phone numbers which if selected and clicked from a mobile device will automatically initiate the phone call.

“Mobile internet browsing is a growing phenomenon,” explains Worth Powers, VarTech Marketing Specialist. “Right now the mobile browsers do not have the same capability as the PC browsers. Until they do we want to give our audience the best possible user experience no matter what technology they use.”

Uses for Small Form Factor PCs from Industrial to Aesthetics

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Small form factor computers are housed in smaller cases and usually have smaller motherboards than regular desktops. For industrial workstations, they can enable quick replacement of the core computer. By maximizing a workstation’s uptime, they can ensure the highest level of productivity.

Another specialized use for small form factors is as rugged mobile PCs. VarTech sells a ruggedized, low power SFF PC which is engineered to withstand high shock and vibration levels. This would be very useful for things such as military field operations or on boats.

Digital signage is coming into a new era of dynamic displays and interactive displays. SFF computers can be easily mounted and used to drive a large LCDs digital signage or interactive touch screen operations.

For the very design conscious minimalists a small form factor can be mounted to the underside of their table or even to the LCD itself. VarTech sells rugged and industrial SFF machines but there are certainly SFF machines out there by people like Macintosh which are designed just for the aesthetics of having a small footprint.

New LED Backlight Technology for Sunlight Readable LCDs with Low Power Consumption

Monday, March 5th, 2007

Digg!

A growing number of LCD products are being operated in high ambient light conditions, usually outdoors in direct or indirect sunlight. There is a greater need for these products to not only be able to endure extensive operational temperatures, sometimes as low as -40C, but also be readable when operasting in extreme optical conditions such as direct and/or indirect sunlight, high glare and reflection.

VarTech Systems has developed a ground-breaking LED backlight technology which will not only operated in high light and extreme temperature conditions but also have some unique features that makes it more efficient and more ruggedized. This new technology creates an amazingly bright LCD display without increased heat from the traditional sunlight readable technology  of higher wattage CCFL backlight integration. LED backlight technology when coupled with a liquid crystal display (LCD) provides the best of both worlds – a high brightness LCD monitor with low power consumption.

VarTech’s LED backlighting also extends the lifetime of the display system because as the LED backlighting begins its end-of-life transition, a single lamp may fail at varying times unlike the loss of the entire backlight function with a CCFL high bright. This new technology by VarTech also creates a sunlight readable monitor with inherit protections against environmental factors such as shock, vibration and frigid temperatures. LED backlighting technology enables all these benefits while maintaining reasonable thermal levels of the LCD. With VarTech’s new LED high bright technology, a 15” 1000 nit liquid crystal display will consume around 24W of power compared to our equivalent 15” actively enhanced CCFL solution which consumes 65W. Additionally, VarTech’s LED-enhanced systems will not require heaters as needed by CCFL solutions for use within extreme low temperatures. This is beneficial when operating in frigid temperatures and immediate LCD response time operation is crucial. Additionally, even in the extreme temperatures the LCD can immediately be turned to full brightness without any lag time which can typically be caused by the use of integrated heaters.
